What "Rustic" Really Means: Reclaimed, Quarried, and Zero-Waste Plank at Stone Curators

A common assumption we hear from designers: if it looks reclaimed, it’s priced like reclaimed. That’s true for some of our rustic plank line — and not true for most of it.

Seven products carry the rustic plank look at Stone Curators, and they come from four different places: hand-set curbstone pulled off New England roads, centuries-old granite salvaged from Chinese village streets, gneiss quarried in Italy’s Dolomites, and splitface granite milled as a byproduct of new curbstone production. Only two of those four sourcing methods are truly reclaimed. The other two are quarried and zero-waste new production — and they’re priced accordingly, from $20 to $25 per square foot.

Why Reclaimed Costs More

Reclaimed stone is salvaged, sorted, and shipped one lot at a time. Reclaimed New England Curbstone ($40/sf) and the reclaimed granite planks from China ($30–$35/sf) carry decades or centuries of authentic wear that can’t be manufactured — and that scarcity and labor is reflected in the price. It’s also why color and lead time vary more: no two reclaimed lots are exactly alike.

Why the Rest of the Line Doesn't

Heritage Plank Granite ($25/sf) is a genuine zero-waste product — a splitface plank milled from material left over from new granite curbstone production. It isn’t a lesser version of the reclaimed look; it’s a different sourcing method entirely, with tighter color control and faster turnaround because it isn’t waiting on a salvage shipment.

Pietra Italia Gneiss ($20/sf) is quarried, not reclaimed, but its natural cleft face and rust-toned patina read like a material that has earned its age. It’s the lowest price point in the program and one of the most requested pairings alongside our reclaimed curbstone — designers use it to extend the reclaimed look across a larger area without extending the reclaimed budget.

Choosing the Right Plank for the Project

Once the pricing logic is clear, choosing among the seven comes down to three questions: what story the material needs to tell, how it needs to perform underfoot, and how quickly it needs to land on site.

Start With Provenance

Reclaimed New England Curbstone is the only plank in the lineup pulled directly off local roads when they’re resurfaced — hand-set stone with decades of real wear and high color variability across gray, greige, and rust. It’s the right call when a client wants a genuine New England story, not just a reclaimed look.

Reclaimed Footworn Granite ($35/sf) and Reclaimed Rustic Granite ($30/sf) come from the same source: centuries-old village streets across China, being modernized to concrete. Footworn is gauged to a consistent 2″ and worn glass-smooth — the faster, lower-labor install of the two. Rustic Granite is left in a thicker 3–4″ cut, rougher underfoot and better suited to stepping stones and informal paths than to high-heel traffic.

Pietra Italia Gneiss pairs well alongside New England Curbstone for projects that want the reclaimed look with quarried consistency of supply.

When Lead Time Is the Priority

Heritage Plank Granite (Buff, Full Color, or Steel) is newly produced rather than salvaged, so color and lead time are far more predictable than anything reclaimed. Buff runs warm greige-to-tan; Full Color opens up to blue, gray, greige, and tan; Steel narrows to a cooler blue-and-gray palette. All three install the same way and ship faster than reclaimed stock.

Match the Finish to the Foot Traffic

Roughness underfoot varies as much as price does, and it doesn’t track neatly with sourcing method. From smoothest to roughest: Reclaimed Footworn Granite installs worn glass-smooth despite being reclaimed. Pietra Italia Gneiss comes next, with more texture but still an easy, regular walking surface. Heritage Plank Granite sits in the middle of the range — Buff, Full Color, and Steel all share the same finish underfoot. Reclaimed New England Curbstone carries more texture than any of those. And Reclaimed Rustic Granite is the roughest surface in the lineup, better suited to stepping stones and informal paths than to areas requiring a smooth, high-heel-friendly walking surface.

The Range in Brief

  • Reclaimed New England Curbstone – $40/sf – reclaimed, hand-set, highest color variability
  • Reclaimed Footworn Granite – $35/sf – reclaimed, 2″ gauged, smooth underfoot
  • Reclaimed Rustic Granite – $30/sf – reclaimed, 3–4″ cut, rougher surface
  • Heritage Plank Granite (Buff / Full Color / Steel) – $25/sf – zero-waste, splitface, fast lead time
  • Pietra Italia Gneiss – $20/sf – quarried, natural cleft, high color variability
